I've always prided myself on being the best at three things in particular: navigation, penmanship, and driving. I'm 51 and have never had an accident or speeding ticket. (granted, there was a DUI 15 years ago, but I digress.) Anyway, a couple of years ago, I was doing yardwork, using a Weedeater when a small chip of something still unknown to me ricocheted up and hit my right eye. I thought nothing of it and continued the yardwork. The next day my eye was really bothering me, so I had my wife look to see if anything was in it, but she didn't see anything. So I went on with my life, albeit with a sore eye. After two weeks of constant eye-rubbing, my wife convinced me to go to the doctor. It turns out I got a fungal corneal infection from that tiny chip of nothingness that hit me while doing yardwork. Long story short--Three failed corneal transplants and two years later, I'd had enough and had my eye removed. Last week I finally got my prosthetic. When I returned home from my appointment I thought my wife was having a stroke or something. She just sat there staring at me in disbelief. The prosthetic looks EXACTLY the same as my old eye looked and matches my left eye perfectly. So I'm officially back to normal since she and I are the only ones that know I only have one eye. Today, my driving streak, navigation prowess, and stunning penmanship continues unabated. The morals of my story: always use eye protection when doing anything that might damage your eyes, and don't drink and drive.
