Kudos to you! My wife and I have been happily married for 16 wonderful, childless years, so I keep it simple when asked the unavoidable question. I just say that we both like to travel, often in the spur of the moment, and we've yet to have to scramble to find a babysitter. Also, I refute their "you're selfish" argument by reminding them that our taxes are used for public education, too, and that I find it sad that we care more about their child's education than they do. That's when the conversation usually ends, because I don't have the time or desire to argue or defend what I see as completely logical and financially-responsible choices. Besides, our dogs need to be fed before I take them on their(at least) twice-daily car ride, and, as a bonus, it's highly unlikely that any of our pets will be on either end of a school shooting.
