That's precisely why my wife and I will never have kids, but we'll ALWAYS have dogs (from the shelter). Every one we've had (we're currently on numbers four and five), were/are mutts of various sizes and abilities, and all have been the most loyal companions we could've asked for. And you're right, all they've ever wanted is to be safe in a home where they're loved. So I will always encourage anyone who's looking for a dog or cat to adopt one from the shelter. Not only will that simple act save a life, it will improve yours immeasurably.
As a matter of fact, as I'm typing this I have a one-eyed, 16-year-old puggle in my lap.
